After phone calls earlier this week, it has been decided that for now I will concentrate my efforts to work on the MSN program and wait to see if the BSN program asks for assistance. However, I would like to note that there appears to be a clear territorial separation between BSN vs MSN and the other previous experiences have eluded to a great difficulty for MSN Nursing Education students to coordinate any efforts with BSN students. Just sayin'.....
Please see after the break for notes from Margaret regarding emails about EBI.
From Margaret: (My comments)
"I can understand their protection of the grad - this assures a higher response rate. I can also see why they protect the data between institutions so more institutions will buy their services. I can also see why they consider you an outsider/external person - not on staff. However you are right about their old methods.
What reports do we get from them about our grads? Redirect to Ora, Angela
How is the report currently being used? Ora and/or Accreditation Committee
Were these reports used in the AACN accreditation report? Accreditation Committee
From those reports we could capture the categories of questions and design our own surveys with the assistance of institutional research. We also need to instill in our students the importance of capturing student, grad and alumni data to better evaluate our program. This is evidence-based practice for our educational system. We could give the students examples of how we have used the data to redesign our curriculum or offer student support. I could make a presentation and give to senior students.
Options we could consider
- At least annual assessment of our student cohorts - could be captured through BB as confidential data. We could get list of those who responded and after graduation all data would be linked for each student. We need to talk to the institutional research folks at CSUSB. Need to be able to export data collected into spreadsheet for analysis and to link to alumni collection.
- Routinely conduct focus groups with cohorts. Can occur in CN Student Forums. We can utilize video broadcast technology to increase student attendance and participation.
- Have the MS students in nursing education explore the data for learning purposes. NEEDED NOW!!! Non-disclosure agreement between students and department. NEEDED NOW!!!!
Kevin your model along with other Models of Student Success could be part of the framework to guide this effort. Susan's work could be part of this as well. The focus is on the student as the center of the model as he or she moves through the system. Program outcomes should include successful completion of each year, graduation rates, NCLEX, as well as meeting the community health needs. Model of student success sounds great. However, in trying to keep my thesis "doable" I would like to focus in on the alumni aspect with survey deployment methods and usefulness of data collected. My starting point occurs at the senior exit survey. I could work with Susan after graduation on joining our efforts into CSUSB policies and procedures.
Once we get accreditation after the visit, the entire process and outcome evaluation system needs to be examined and perhaps redesigned. I have been trying to examine undergraduate, but Teresa would like me to evaluate MSN program with full cooperation. Undergrads may seen immediate need very soon ;)
Question - Can you tell from the EDI website how many schools use their data? What proportion of the CSU nursing programs use their system. Over 1500 schools use EBI for various academic programs including: (click here for complete list)
- Management
- Teaching
- Engineering
- Nursing
Is Versant the other data collector? Versant RN is a program that has developed a nationally used nursing residency program. I went through the program at Loma Linda and they collect tons and tons of information ranging from demographics to competency self assessment at routine intervals to measure the transition process. What I've wanted to do for my thesis is being done, and for a profit. The snowball effect has made the new graduate transition a monster and cemented the disconnect between employers and schools.
