N600 Week 2 - Journal

Summary
  • Goal: Define population
  • Phone Discussion with Dr. Teresa Todd-Butera (2)
  • Read CCNE Accreditation Standards (2)
  • Met with Dr. Marilyn Stoner to discuss population and topic (2)
  • Journal Preparation (2)
Weekly Hour Total: (8)
Total Hours: (8)

Date: Jan 15, 2011
Location: Phone Conference

Objective:
  • A.1 - Defines a problem
  • C.2 - Solicits input from individuals and organizations
Role: Research

Contact or Precepter: T. Todd-Butera

What I did: Discuss possible preceptor assignment and population focus. After some consideration, it was determined that the population would be senior nursing students and assessing their transition from student to licensed professional. I would be able work with Jean Nix or Patricia Spencer on the current CSUSB BSN undergraduate accreditation process. My technical strengths would be utilized to help track students after graduation.

Hours: (2)

Date: Jan 17, 2011
Location: CSUSB Campus

Objective:
  • E.1 - Establishes and maintains linkages with key stakeholders.
  • F.1 - Identifies the individual’s and organization’s responsibilities within the context of the Essential Public Health Services and core functions.
Role: Research

Contact or Precepter: Awaiting response from J. Nix and/or Pt. Spencer

What I did: After speaking with T.T.B., I took steps to initiate my population assessment of senior nursing students at CSUSB. The first step was acquiring a preceptor (link) with the current CSUSB BSN Coordinator, Jean Nix. Several emails were sent to solicit a response. Meanwhile, I became familiarized with the CCNE Accreditation Standards for BSN programs. Standards 3 and 4 (Program Quality: Curriculum and Teaching-Learning Practice & Program Effectiveness: Aggregate Student and Faculty Outcome)  can aide in measuring the transitional process.

The CCNE standards play a part n the following Essential Public Health Services:

  • Identify and response to health problems or threats.
    • Trends indicate a nursing shortage is looming to become critical by 2018
  • Make sure people receive the medical care they need.
  • Maintain a competent public health and medical workforce.
  • Evaluate and improve programs
  • Support innovation and identify and use best practices
(CCNE Standards and EPHS relationships to be further explored and documented)

Hours: (2)

Date: Jan 21, 2011
Location: Calimesa, CA

Objective: A.10 - Applies data collection processes, information technology applications, and computer systems storage/retrieval strategies.

Role: Research

Contact or Precepter: Dr. Marilyn Stoner

What I did: Marilyn and I brainstormed future possibilites for the population assessment related to senior students at CSUSB. She recommended an approach at which I define my population as "Unemployed Newly Licensed Nurses" and using a socialization theory for describing the transitional process. FaceBook was discussed as a possible medium for gathering data from graduated students. An new (2.0) interpretation of a socialization theory should include the ability to insert the recent explosion of social networking and its application to research & nursing education. She also suggested doing a pilot run on recently graduated students from the Fall 2010 class. Future classes for official data collection would include the Winter 2011 Class at PDC and The Spring 2011 Class.
