INTRODUCTION

Nursing students undergo rigorous study requirements during an undergraduate education coupled with clinical experience. Educational institutions are encouraged to acquire “alumni satisfaction data and the accomplishments of graduates of the program” (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 2009). However, an easily accessible population available for feedback is senior nursing students.

Prior to graduation, various nursing departments require senior students to participate in an exit survey. Though not yet licensed professionals, senior students can offer fresh reflective insight of the strengths and weaknesses of their preparation. Kim (2007) gathered feedback from senior students who were asked to evaluate their preceptorship program. Results were analyzed and used in refining the program for future classes. Also gaining popularity, mentoring programs offer an informal method for these experienced students to pass on hints and tips for incoming lower classmen (Scott, 2005). Both opportunities allow for the graduating student to form a contributive, or giving back, relationship to the program.

The aim of this report will be to provide an assessment of the senior nursing student population at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB).

1. DEFINITION

1.1 Formal Definition

Senior nursing students completing Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) graduation requirements during the 2010-2011 school year at CSUSB.

1.2 Informal Definition

By tradition, the graduating students are identified into cohorts by final term. Thus for the 2010-2011 school year, the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 cohorts are subdivisions of the population.

2. DESCRIPTION

2.1 Physical Boundaries

CSUSB is known as a commuter school (Thompson, 2010). Because of it’s central location in the Inland Empire, students travel from the distant corners ofSan Bernardino County as well as the neighboring counties of Orange County, Los Angeles County, San Diego County, and Riverside County.

2.2 History

The traditional track for BSN students at CSUSB requires at four years of undergraduate coursework. Senior students of the 2010-2011 school year were admitted to the nursing program during the Winter 2008 and Fall 2008 terms. The Winter 2008 cohort consisted of XX students, while the Fall 2008 cohort with XX students. (Still gathering data and history from CSUSB Nursing Department)

2.3 Larger Student Body Description

As nursing students are considered part of the larger CSUSB population, a general description of the CSUSB student body is deemed appropriate. Data collected from the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years will be used as obtained from California State University Analytic Studies Department.

Reports from California State University (CSU) Analytic Studies Department shows that during the 2009-2010 school year, enrolled female students represent 64% of the total student population. When categorized by age, the majority of the student population is between the ages of 18 and 24. (See charts 2.3.1 and 2.3.2)

CSU Analytic Studies also publishes a report identifying the ethnicity of enrolled students. Data for the 2009-2010 school year is not yet available by campus, so the 2008-2009 school year will be used. The two largest ethnic populations are White and Mexican American accounting for more than 50% of the total student population. An Unknown category is used to identify students who choose not to identify with an ethnicity. The other major ethnic group, African American, represent about 12% of the student population at CSUSB. (See chart 2.3.3)
